Strubbe Family Reunion

June 15th-18th we headed to Michigan City, Indiana for my Strubbe Family reunion.  There were some 60 -plus Strubbe family members there, from all over the country!  The last reunion was three years ago in Tahoe City, CA, right on the banks of beautiful Lake Tahoe.  That summer LJ and I did a 6 week long road trip throughout the West.  We started our trip at Lake Tahoe and drove north towards Seattle.  We ended our trip in Yellowstone NP in WY.  It was an amazing journey that I'm so glad we were able to do before we moved away from the West.
This reunion a lot has changed for LJ and I, but it was so great to be able to share our new life and new baby Henry with our family!  Henry definitely made a lot of new friends!

One year ago today...

One year ago today, on June 27, 2011, we found out that Henry would be coming into our lives.  It is amazing to think that its been a year since we've known that we were going to have a baby, and amazing to think about how much has changed since that day.
I was fairly certain that I was pregnant when I took the pregnancy test, so when it was positive it just confirmed what I already thought I knew.  It was a Monday and we had just gotten back from a weekend away in Crested Butte, CO (about 5 hours south-west of Denver).  We were there because I was doing a weekend children's yoga training called Yoginos.  All weekend long I had a feeling that I was pregnant, and I also had some very pertinent information from my cycle that supported that feeling.  The night before I took the pregnancy test LJ and I were driving back home to Denver.  We decided to take a "short-cut" over Cottonwood Pass from Crested Butte to Buena Vista, CO.  Cottonwood pass is a gnarly pass that traverses  an amazingly beautiful part of Colorado.  It is also the road less traveled... we got lost a few times, and on the back side  it is not paved, so it is only drive-able in the summer.  As we drove home we talked about being excited to have a baby and LJ asked me if I really thought I was pregnant.  I said I was about "70% sure" that I was.
On Monday, June 27, 2011 I took the pregnancy test when I first woke up in the morning.  LJ had already gone to work, so I called him to see if he could meet up for lunch that day so I could share this amazing news.  Since we had left town on Friday to go to Crested Butte and LJ had missed that day of work, and he was swamped at the office.  He said we'd have to plan lunch for a different day.  I wasn't going to share this news with him over the phone, so I had to sit with this secret all day!  That night I tutored until 8:30pm and then was finally able to come home and tell LJ.  I saved the test and wrapped it up.  I also made LJ a card that said:  "Congratulations, you're going to be a Daddy!"  Before I even gave him the package his smile told me that he knew what I was going to say.  We celebrated by going for a lovely walk in our Wash Park neighborhood and marveled at this amazing gift we had been given; still in shock and disbelief.   It was a really special day that signaled the most profound change I've ever experienced in my life.  Everyday I feel so blessed that we were chosen to be Henry's parents.

Henry at 3 Months

I just read over my post about Henry at 2 months and was amazed by how much he has grown and changed in one month!  At this point, its actually been over a month, as Henry is now 15 weeks!  I'm not even sure where to start, but I guess I'll start with sleep, as that seems to be on our minds recently.
When I last wrote Henry was doing most of his night-time sleeping in the swing in our bedroom.  Since then, Henry is now sleeping for 5-7 hours at a time at night in his Pack-n-play in our bedroom!  Our bedtime routine looks like this:
-LJ usually tries to give him a bath sometime around 8pm or so... he loves to be in the tub and splash around!
-get out of the bath and read a bed-time story with Dad
-nurse to sleep around 9 ish and he's usually asleep between 10-10:30pm, unless we keep him up later for some social function
-put him in the swing for 15 min before putting him in the Pack-n-play
-transfer him to the pack-n-play and he will sleep from around 10pm- 4am (on a good night)
-many times he wakes around 1am, because he has gotten one of his hands out of his swaddle.  I don't think he's hungry at this time for the most part, so I usually just re-swaddle him and give him a pacifier and he goes back to sleep.
I usually nurse him anytime between 3-5am and then he will go back to sleep until around 8 -8:30am.  For this shorter morning stretch, I have been putting him back to sleep in his swing in our bedroom, but soon this will be changing.  When he wakes up around 8ish I bring him into bed with me and we nurse, snuggle, and snooze for another hour or so.
LJ and I have been talking about transitioning Henry into his crib in his own room.  I am not sure that I am ready for this transition (although Henry would probably do just fine), as I like to have him close to me so that I can check on him and know that he is safe.  It is also easier for me to nurse him in the night.  I think a gentle way to start this transition is putting Henry back to sleep in his bedroom after he wakes to eat sometime between 3-5am.  I'll have to let you know how this transition goes!
This week we had a night where Henry slept from 10pm-5am, with no interruptions, which was glorious!  However, last night he was restless from 1:30-2:30am, so his nights can still be variable.
For naps Henry has started taking one really LONG nap a day, and the rest are about half an hour or so.  I have found that Henry will nap for about 3 hours if I swaddle him, rock him until he is very drowsy, then put him down in his swing in his bedroom, and let him fall asleep.  We will see how long this lasts, but for right now it is really nice for me!
Physically, Henry has grown a ton.  He gained 2 lbs in the last month, from 12-14 lbs, which is fantastic!
Developmentally Henry has also met some major milestones.  He discovered his hands and feet, which has provided lots of entertainment!  Henry first discovered his hands, and ever since they have been in his mouth.  Since Henry discovered his feet about 2 weeks ago he has been doing lots of "happy baby" (a yoga pose where you hold your feet in your hands and bring them up towards your face).  Henry has also mastered the art of batting at toys and can now grasp them in his hands and bring them up to his face to put in his mouth.  He especially loves to gnaw on the O-ball teether and the Sophie giraffe.  Henry continues to be drooling up a storm, but he hasn't cut any teeth yet.
Henry still really dislikes tummy time, but we try to do it more often, for shorter periods of time so that he doesn't get too discouraged.  Henry can hold up his head on his own and sit up supported.  He has not yet figured out how to roll over.
Henry continues to be really social, and loves to "talk" to people in his environment, especially LJ and I and his grandma and grandpa Horth who he sees on a regular basis.  Henry enjoys observing his environment, but this has started to lead to very distracted nursing.  It is getting increasingly harder to nurse him in a place where there are other people or lots of outside stimuli.  It is also hard to nurse him where there are ceiling fans, as he continues to be fascinated with them!
In the past month have been very busy with lots of fun trips and visits with family.  The past two weekends have been filled with activities.  June 9-10th we had family in town for Henry's baptism and our niece's 2 year old birthday party at the Sustar Domes.  This past weekend we traveled to Michigan City, IN for my Strubbe family reunion.  Henry was a rock star at both events and did really well being passed around to many different family members!
Henry just continues to get more and more fun as he grows and changes!

Birthday Celebration

My 28th birthday was May 14th, and it was unlike any other birthday I've had before - my first as a mother!  Even though it was a lot different than past birthdays, I think it was my favorite so far.  I'm looking forward to celebrating many more birthdays with my sweet boys.
